Smithsonian National Zoo Birdhouse, Washington, DC

Situated atop a prominent plateau within the Smithsonian National Zoo, the Bird House was originally constructed in 1928, then expanded in 1936 thanks to funding provided by New Deal programs. Major renovations in the 1960s included interior and exterior modifications and the addition of the Great Flight Aviary. Today’s renovation includes interior and exterior modification to the majority of the Bird House and surrounding grounds. Exterior work includes roof expansion, skylight replacements, extensive glazing and new glass enclosures, stormwater management and utility upgrades, as well as extensive landscape management. Interior renovations will completely reconfigure the building’s entrance, visitor circulation, guest services, and will reincorporate the Bird House’s grand historic portal to a prominent location just beyond the building’s new main entry. This renovation will make way for the Bird House’s new state-of-the-art exhibition – the migration of birds in the Western Hemisphere. This project is designed to achieve LEED Gold designation and is expected to be completed Spring 2021.
