Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building At University Of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD

Constructed at the center of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s campus, this project replaced an aging Academic Services building, and represents the University’s commitment to education and innovation of Life Sciences and evidences the community’s respect for the surrounding campus and a thoughtful balance of a vibrant campus community and the natural world. Situated between two of UMBC’s most frequented communal spaces (Commons Plaza and the Quad), the new 130,000 SF building connects teaching and research on campus through the addition of lecture, classroom, and collaboration spaces, a Good Manufacturing Processes (GMP) Lab Training Facility, environmental systems lab, a BioProcess and Cell Science Facility, and more than a dozen other research labs. The building was designed to achieve LEED Silver designation, and features a green roof, strategically situated glass facades, energy efficient systems throughout, and exterior landscape which include preservation of natural habitat, a raingarden, and native species promote carbon sequestration, habitat creation, and a reduction of urban heat island effect.
